History

John Walker presented a history of Winch Challenges in NZ with the 1st event in 2000 at Lahar. 2nd event 2001 held same place under Auckland banner.
2002 Auckland Club ran an event with Denny’s sponsorship. Rules have been modified over the events.
2003 event again run but we had issues with IRD due to the turnover. Proposed was NZ 4 x 4 Challenges that was GST registered.
The objective of this club is to promote winch challenge events and support those who wanted to run an event with rules, scoring system and gear.
2005 – Craig Lord came on board with Warlord Motorsport and again in 2006.
Rules initially adopted from Australia were made to suit our conditions with an excellent rules group. Original ethos was that vehicles would be road legal
John acknowledged people that have put in a lot of time into the event over the years.

Peter Vahry continued with the history from a National NZFWDA point of view. Association insurances only apply with an affiliated club. Cover Public Liability, Fire cover and legal liability. Incorporated society registered for GST and Income tax.
Developed spreadsheets of how to run the event. Membership has been open but only a relatively small group. To join 4 x 4 challenges $11.25 if Association member. If not then $28.00

Discussion

Background of CCDA given by Jack Talbot. Business ventures and private organisers and how this is managed.
Discussion about the insurance covering private organisation. NZFWDA insurance does not cover. Would need a private commercial insurance outside of Association.
Pete Weatherley spoke about the events he has run and some of the background to where they are now.
Non road registered as a new class has been tried. They are hand picked competitors to grow the numbers involved. Discussion about how to manage this and perhaps grow this and not have it take over. The safety issue is taken away and the liability issue with road legal trucks.
A National series was always the intention of 4 x 4 Challenges. With Whangarei and NorWest now becoming a possibility.
Scoring will need to be at an overall standard. National set of rules with a national scoring system.
Howard Nattrass:

  • 4 x 4 Challenges governing body
  • Competitors must be members of 4 x 4 challenges + member of NZFWDA
  • Annual competition fee + log book
  • 6 point cage needs to be mandatory
  • Trained marshals are required - production of a DVD as a training aid may be required

Discussion on rollcage systems.
Log books go with all vehicles and the damage and repairs noted.
Suggested talking to the Competition committee re management of event.
Do we have a series is the first step? Before we are concerned with details.
Peter Vahry moved that the idea that NZ 4 x 4 Challenges be the overall body. Seconded Howard Nattrass. PASSED
Peter Vahry moved that we go with a national series as a basic concept. Seconded PASSED
Should go out to all competitors
Discussion on fees.
